Desperados III is a story-driven, hardcore tactical stealth game, set in a ruthless Wild West scenario.
In this long-awaited prequel to the beloved classic Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive, John Cooper will join forces with the runaway bride Kate, the shady hitman Doc McCoy, the giant trapper Hector, and Isabelle, a mysterious lady from New Orleans. On Cooper’s quest for redemption, his adventures lead him and his gang from rural towns, over swamps and riverbanks, and finally to a dramatic showdown worthy of Wild West legends.

Desperados 3 is a long-awaited title that uses the cross platform game engine Unity3D. While the Mimimi game studio developers promised us a Linux version but not on day one, we are eager to play it as soon as it will be released. Fortunately enough the game runs quite well on Linux and here we’ll show you how to run it on your Linux machine.
This game requires DXVK, Wine/Proton/ProtonGE, and Windows Media Foundation a.k.a mfplat.
In the first place you’ll have to install DXVK. It’s very easy but if you don’t know how to install it, follow our understandable tutorial.
Now you have two choices:
- You can download and use Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF and you are good to go. In this build there are all needed media foundation work and the game will run. There is a problem though – you can’t rotate the map with the alt key.
UPDATE:
With Proton-5.9-GE-2-MF the Alt problem is fixed!!! - You can use Wine 5.5 (not newer) but you’ll have to install mfplat. With this Wine version you can rotate the map but the game will crash from time to time when you select map tutorials. When you load and try again to play the tutorial, it will not crash and you can watch the video.
Let’s install Windows Media Foundation. There’s unofficial script by z0z0z and you’ll have to dоwnlоаd it, ехtrасt іt, ехроrt Wіnе рrеfіх раth in terminal, аnd run thе іnѕtаll ѕсrірt.
- Export your Wine prefix path where you installed the game:
export WINEPREFIX="/path/to/your/wine/prefix"
- Make the script executable and start the it with double click or via terminal:
./install-mf.sh
You can also use ESync for a FPS boost.
That’s it. Now you can play Desperados 3 on Linux!
