Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Horn of The Abyss Multiplayer Linux Wine – how to play this games on Linux.

When Erathia’s King Gryphonheart is murdered by traitors he is resurrected as an undead warlord who leads a ruthless invasion of his former Kingdom. Little resistance is met until his daughter Catherine, Queen of Enroth, returns to her homeland commanding an army of elite Enrothian warriors. Meanwhile the Necromancers raise large hordes of undead and advance towards the Erathian capitol. Queen Catherine receives the aid of her father’s survived generals and embarks on a crusade to reclaim her lost land.

Heroes of Might and Magic III: Horn of the Abyss (abbreviated as HotA) is a fan-made full scale add-on for Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Shadow of Death, designed to continue the classical Heroes III add-on series of RoE/AB/SoD.

Despite the fact there’s no Linux versions for Heroes of Might and Magic 3 and Horn of The Abyss, you can play them on Linux without any problems. Multiplayer works too! For this games you’ll need only Wine or Wine-Staging and some tweaking. Don’t be afraid, we’ll guide you through the entire process. Let’s start!

If you have Wine installed the game runs out-of-the-box. If you want to play multiplayer, however, you’ll have to first install directplay for LAN games. It’s easy as issue the following command in terminal:

winetricks directplay

As a second step go to the game’s root folder and find DPWSOCKX.DLL. Rename or delete it. The LAN multiplayer works between Linux and Windows in a home LAN or with Hamachi/Haguichi no matter who is host/guest.
