Torchlight III was released and while there is no word from developers if the game will be released for Linux, we can play it without any problems at all. There are Linux versions of Torchlight I and Torchlight II but they both was released many months later after the initial launch of the game. While we wait for another Linux release, why not learn how to play Torchlight III on Linux as soon as possible? Let’s go!
For this game you’ll need Wine or ProtonGE, DXVK and Windows Media Foundation a.k.a mfplat.
There are two options – you can play the game with latest ProtonGE form GloriousEggroll or play the game with vanilla Wine.
If you decide to use ProtonGE, which is the easier way, you have to download Proton-5.9-GE-8-ST. In the latest ProtonGE releases there are many mfplat implementations and the game works very well wit them. Here’s how to use ProtonGE:
Crеаtе а ~/.ѕtеаm/rооt/соmраtіbіlіtуtооlѕ.d dіrесtоrу іf іt dоеѕ nоt ехіѕt, ехtrасt thе rеlеаѕе tаrbаll іntо ~/.ѕtеаm/rооt/соmраtіbіlіtуtооlѕ.d/, rеѕtаrt Ѕtеаm аnd Enable proton-ge-custom.
Now you only have to install DXVK and you are ready to go. If you don’t know how to install it, you can refer to our very easy DXVK installation tutorial. Done!
Option too is to use Wine vanilla. If you choose this option, you’ll have to install Windows Media Foundation (mfplat) manually. It’s a very hard task but thanks to z0z0z it can be done in seconds.
Dоwnlоаd the archive, ехtrасt іt, ехроrt Wіnе рrеfіх раth in terminal, аnd run thе іnѕtаll ѕсrірt:
- Export your Wine prefix path where you installed the game:
export WINEPREFIX="/path/to/your/wine/prefix"
- Make the script executable and start the it with double click or via terminal:
./install-mf.sh
You are ready! Now you can play Torchlight III on Linux!
You can also use ESync for an additional FPS boost.
