Forza Horizon 4 – how to play this game on Linux.

Forza Horizon 4 is a UWP Xbox Game Studios and until now it doesn’t run on Linux but the moment finally come. Not running Forza Horizon 4 on Linux was the final dealbraker for many people to migrate completely to Linux. Now you can tell your friends to join our magnificient journey and leave Windows for good! Do you want to play Forza Horizon 4 on Linux? Read on!

For this game you’ll need only VKD3D v.2.3 or newer, Proton, Mesga-Git video driber and Wine component installation. You can instal VKD3D just as you’ve always installed DXVK. If you don’t know how, check our tutorial here.

In order to start the game, it’s required to use latest Proton Experimental build. The Valve team will upstream the needed patches shortly but for now you are going to use this build.

One final step is to install Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2017. It’s easy as:

winetricks -q vcrun2017

If you are using the Steam version you can skip this step.

Of course you can always use Winetrisk’s GUI bit it’s a lot faster from the terminal.

Important:

Please be adviced the game is running only on AMD GPU’s at the moment. We’ll wait for NVIDIA to step in with a fix. For now the game crashes during the first race.

UPDATE!!!

In order to play with NVIDIA card, create a file dxvk.conf with the following content:

dxgi.customVendorId = 10de

and put it in the game’s root directory.

And that’s it! Now you can play Forza Horizon 4 on Linux and with perfect performance!!!
