Age of Empires Definitive Edition Linux DXVK Wine
Age of Empires: Definitive Edition is a Windows 10 only game as it’s advertised. It’s nothing new as it’s developed by Microsoft’s Xbox Game Studios. Funny enough you can play it on Linux too and it’s very easy. Read on to learn how.
For this game you’ll need Wine-Staging or Proton, DXVK and Visual C++ 2017. For setting up DXVK you can refer to our easy guide here.
Installing Visual C++ 2017 is very easy from Winetricks GUI or via terminal:
winetricks -q vcrun2017
We’re almost there. The ingame movies doesn’t work and will prevent the game for starting with an error. To fix this, go to the game’s directory and rename or delete the Videos folder. You can find it in the Assets folder.
If the game crashes at start on your end, try to set Windows XP from Wine settings. You can start Wine settings from your system menu or from the terminal:
winecfg
You can also use ESync for a performance boost but keep in mind the game max framerate is 60 FPS.
For me the game worked nice without mfplat (Windows Media Foundation) but some people says you’ll need it. If you experience problems you can isntall it easy. Dоwnlоаd thе аrсhіvе with the script and the needed libraries frоm GіtНub, ехtrасt іt, ехроrt Wіnе рrеfіх раth in terminal, аnd run thе іnѕtаll ѕсrірt.
- Export your Wine prefix path where you installed the game:
export WINEPREFIX="/path/to/your/wine/prefix"
- Make the script executable and start the it with double click or via terminal:
./install-mf.sh
Done! Now you can play Age of Empires: Definitive Edition on Linux too!
- Wine-Staging version used in the video: 5.2 with ESync enabled.
- DXVK version: 1.5.2
