HandBrake е приложение с отворен код, с чиято помощ може да се конвертира почти всеки един видео файл или DVD в MKV или MP4.
HandBrake е кросплатформен софтуер и се предоставя за Windows, Linux и Mac OS X. Интерфейсът е стандартен за подобен тип програми за конвертиране на видео и потребителите не би трябвало да имат проблеми при работата с нея.
Добавянето на видео файловете е много лесно, като се използва файловия мениджър или с просто влачене в основния прозорец. Могат да се добавят както видео файлове, така и DVD папки.
На видно място са сложени опциите по избиране на заглавие, избиране на глава, определяне на директория за изходния видео файл, управляване на опашката, както и добавяне на видео файлове в нея, бутони за стартиране на процеса по конвертирането и неговото поставяне на пауза, бутон за превю, за наблюдение на процеса в реално време, избор на формат за конвертиране и още.
HandBrake дава възможност за прилагане на множество филтри при конвертиране на видео, както и задаване на видео и аудио кодек, да се настройват качеството и битрейтът. Могат да се експортват и импортват пресети, избиране на енкодинг метод, анализ, деблокинг, създаване на лист със задачи, задаване на резолюция.
Възможно е и вграждането на видео субтитри при конвертиране, за съжаление засега само в .SRT формат, като се дават различни опции, като избор на език, метод на вграждане по подразбиране, Burned In или Forced Only.
При конвертиране могат да се избират различни варианти на видео кодек. Изборът е между Theora, H.264, H.265, VP8, MPEG2, MPEG4. Възможен е изборът на това дали конвертирането да е с постоянен фреймрейт или с променливо, както и настройка на самия фреймрейт със задаване на стойност от 5 до 60 кадъра.
При аудиото също може да се избира кодек, като изборът е между AAC, HE-AAC, AC3, DTS Passthru, DTS HD Passthru, MP3, Vorbis, Flac 16 и 24 bit и всичките разновидности на AAC. Може да се настрои аудио битрейта, може да се настрои mixdown, да се настрои Gain, DRC и други.
